Facebook Groups
As well as websites for Genealogy research, more and more people are now turning to the power of Facebook. Over the last 10 years Social websites such as Facebook have become more and more popular with people trying to research their Family history. Because of this, all manner of Groups have been created by people eager to help each other out with research, help and advice.
This is the main reason that the Jewish London Genealogy Facebook Group was set up...to help and advise people, and to offer assistance to those that have just begun their genealogical research.
During my time researching my own Family History, I have found many brilliant Facebook Groups, where people are happy and willing to help you out. My own research has taken me across America, and as far away as Australia. I have personally used Facebook a lot in my research, for gaining help and advice, getting something translated, or requesting help from groups in other Countries. Also, you never know, maybe along the way in one of these groups you will bump into a long lost cousin or two!!
Of course, there are hundreds more genealogy groups on Facebook, these ones are just ones I have encountered on my journey. If you find any that you think are worth joining, please let me know and I can add them to the list below.
Jewish London & Home Counties Genealogy
This is our group, our little place in Facebook! We don't have as many members (yet) as some of these larger groups, but we are getting there! The group was set up to help any body that has (or thinks they may have) Jewish links to London. It was originally set up to cover just the East London area (where my families settled) but due to member demand it now includes the whole of London and surrounding areas. We have some great members who are very knowledgeable and are always willing to help out. Please come and join the group (if you haven't already) and see if we can help you with your research.
We all share the love of Genealogy and the excitment of getting results! Once joined you can add the names that you are researching to our Surname Database for other members to see and we also have a Headstone photo request database, as we have members that regularly visit London Jewish Cemeteries that are more than happy to take photos for you if you can't make it in person.
A huge group with some great members on and replies to posts come very quickly. Not very "Jewish-centric" but you can still gain lost of help from British searches.
A brilliant group for people that may have had Ancestors emigrate to Australia. Very help members and at time of writing this group has almost 5,000 members!
California Genealogy & Genealogists
Found an Ancestor moved to California? Join this group, they'll be able to help you!Lots of very helpfull members always willing to answer posts!
Another great West Coast resource if you need any help from California! Not sure if there is any link between the two California groups, but well worth joining both!
Found an Ancestor moved to Chicago? Join this group, they'll be able to help you! Lots of very helpfull members always willing to answer posts!
Another huge group (at time of writing it has over 12,000 members!). A lot of members seem to be from America, but still worth joining and firing off questions. Posts are answered quickly due to the number of members.
A very helpgul group if you have or obtain any documents that you need translating. A large group that has members fro all over the world and most languages can be translated, just post a photo of the document and members will help!
A smaller group, adn just like our group, this is mainly based around helping researches with links to the Londo area. A great little group with some helpful members.
A group for all people with Jewish ancestry in Poland. A large group with lots of helpfull members and information.
Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain (JGSGB) is one of the largest Jewish family history groups in the world.
Jewish Genealogy-Jews from Posen, Prussia, Germany
Jewish Genealogy Posen, Prussia is for those of you tracing Jewish roots from the Prussian (later German) province of Posen—now in Poland. Great little group!
Jewish family history in Podlaskie Voivodeship
This is a group for all who have an interest in jewish family history related to the Podlaskie Voivodeship.
A large group with some good information and articles.
For everyone whose ancestors came from Ukraine (including Eastern Galicia).
Join this group if you had Ancestors that boarded a boat to New York, and lest face it, most of us did at some stage! A brilliant group with some really helpful members!
Maybe your New Yoek family moves out to New Jersey? Get involved with this group if they did!
Tracing the Tribe - Jewish Genealogy on Facebook
A huge group, specifically for Jewish Genealogy. The group has some very knowledgeable members who are always happy to help! If you have Jewish Ancestors this should be one group that you join!
A smaller, more specific group. Worth joining if you find any links to the Polish town of Zdunska Wola.
